I never thought I would find myself homesteading in New Zealand. Despite growing up on a 5 acre block, I never dreamed of being able to afford my own homestead!
So once again life gets in the way an I failed to do a weekly update before the end of the week. I have decided to remove the weekly from the title to stop the panic on a Thursday or Friday to get one done. No one needs that stress.
I am so very over the Spring weather. It is probably my least favourite, wind and rain and wind and rain and just when you think it is going to be sunny, NOPE more wind (stronger this time) and guess what? MORE RAIN. Not so great for getting work outside done.
So I am a little behind on the blog. Last week I worked madly to get the rabbit house finished/furnished so we could drive to Christchurch and back all in one day (took us 13.5 hours!) to get our bunnies. Here they are enjoying their bunny shed. We got two 6 month old Californian does, one 8 week old Flemish Giant doe and a 9 week old NZ White/Cali cross buck. Hopefully these will be the breeding stock for our new protein source.
Wow 20 weeks since I started our updates?? To quote my 7 year old “This year is going too fast!”. 6 and a bit weeks until Christmas. I do love Christmas! Our girls are getting a cockatiel each for Christmas this year, but they arrive on the pet bus the week before that (I think, I had better check!) so I have started building their outdoor aviary/flight cage.
Fencing has been the job of the week. My Dad has been coming out to us and helping set up an electric fence setup. He has been amazingly helpful and taught me a lot.
Our electric fences are nearly complete. Our goat house and chook house should be functional by the end of the weekend. Time to get us some animals I recon!
This particular fortnight in October in our family is crazy. There is no other word for it. We have 4 birthdays and our wedding anniversary all to be celebrated within 14 days. As a result 1) not so much work has been done, and 2) I have had no time for computers and blogging and such. So you can have a fortnight update this week instead. I am sure you will cope.
Sadly this week our littlest, cutest and sweetest little lambie, dubbed Blacknose, died. She hurt her leg somehow, I suspect she got it caught in a pallet we were using to keep them in bed at night. She pretty much just gave up on life. It wasn’t broken, but she just stopped drinking and despite a cosy box by the fire inside, she didn’t make it.
This week we got some lambies! They are so very cute and so very loved by my children. If you are our friends you will have to excuse our non social behavior for the next few weeks while they need fed 4 times a day. It is a bit of a tie, but it will be worth it in the long run. We have 4 girls and 3 boys all of very mixed breeds by the looks of them.
