VEGETABLES

This month you can make a start sowing some of the hardier vegetables. But most are best started off inside or under cover.

Start sowing peas and fava/broad beans now, in double rows (two close rows with 4in/10cm between seeds ) about 2ft/60cm apart.

Early potatoes can go in now, or you can wait a week or two. They like rich, well drained soil with no lime.

If you have cloches/cold frames/tiny hoop houses you can sow lettuce, cabbage, collards, cauliflower and silverbeet/chard.

Cut any seed heads off the rhubarbs as soon as they appear. A top dressing of manure or blood and bone will improve the harvest.

FRUIT

Prepare the glasshouse now for tomatoes – wash the insides of the glass with a weak bleach solution to kill fungal spores. Tomatoes should not be sown in the same soil twice as they harbour diseases so replace the soil and add manure/compost. The removed soil is perfect for the vegetable garden. Leave the top vents open until you are ready to plant.
