Weekly Garden Diary: Summer Week 3

This post was most recently updated on April 14th, 2017

what to do in the garden this week

This week in the southern hemisphere is it Christmas and the Summer Solstice (and my birthday!).  Life is pretty busy this week, but try and set aside a couple of hours on a fine day to hoe the weeds out around your plants. Hoeing also loosens the soil allowing water and air to get down, and makes the loose soil act like a mulch to help retain moisture.

VEGETABLES

You can still sow peas, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, radish, turnips, cress, spinach and carrots. You can plant out in to well manured soil things like cabbage, cauli, leeks and celery.

Peas, beans and other climbing things need to be staked and tied up.

FRUIT

Blackcurrants once harvested should have old fruited branches removed to encourage growth from new fruiting branches for next year.. Red and white currants can have their young shoots shortened to about 10cm (4in).

The centres of gooseberry bushes need to be kept open, so remove any growth crossing over each other.
